This Urban Farm is a way to recapture the good ole days, the simple days, when one knew where their food came from, because they raised it and prepared it themselves. I've always been an "earthy" person, interested in herbs, and the natural way of life. And I have always had a love for animals as well. The chickens have found a new home and I am now concentrating on rabbits. My original purpose was to raise a variety for my dogs raw diet. But of course, why get a regular rabbit when I can get a show rabbit!
Rush Hour Rabbitry is a small but growing rabbitry, with less than forty holes, but working on quality worth showing. Rex is my primary show breed, the one I raise the ost varieties. My focus colors are Castor, Black Otter and Cal, but their are so many other colors that hide under Castor genes, I can't help but get pretty much very other color, except Red. But their show life compared to other rabbits is very short, so I picked up some Jersey Wooly along the way.
Rex also take longer to grow out as meat rabbits (due to that gorgeous fur) that's the reason for the Silver Fox, whose growth and dress out weight rival the popular meat breeds. The Jersey's because I wanted a dwarf pet breed, but the wool they produce can still be spun. And last but not least, the French Angora are for my fiber projects since keeping sheep aren't really practical. The sky's the limit!
The Barn- A little bit of country
Believe it or not, I live in the heart of the city, with a full sized barn on the property. This parcel used to be an orchard, and the remnants of plum and peach trees still grace the landscape. The barn is larger than my house, with one side for use by the shepherds, and the other side is the bunny barn.
The bunny side is a 12x17 room, with windows on the south and east sides. The placement of the windows determines the number and size of my cages, so I have to be a little creative.
There are currently 19 hanging cages, raging in size from 18x 30", to 30 x 36" with the average being 30x30". I also have several stand alone cages, for use as quarantine cages in the bunny hospital.
